Amazon’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is set for a second season, as confirmed during the company’s upfront presentation in New York. The series, a reimagining of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, debuted its first installment on February 2 to critical acclaim. Donald Glover, who also co-created and executive-produced the series alongside Francesca Sloane, was paired with Maya Erskine of “PEN15” fame for the lead roles.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, expressed excitement about the renewal, citing the success of the first season’s modern and sexy reinvention of the original film. However, despite their integral roles in the first season, Glover and Erskine are not expected to return to star in the upcoming season. Glover has announced plans for a world tour as Childish Gambino from August through February 2025, while Erskine is occupied with penning and starring in the HBO limited series “The Perfect Nanny.”
Francesca Sloane, on the other hand, is likely to return as the series’ showrunner for the second season. As for the storyline, the first season concluded with a finale that left the fate of the main characters, John and Jane Smith, uncertain after a bloody showdown with another pair of spies. This ambiguity opens up the possibility for a new couple to take over the Smith mantle, following the anthology format of recent limited series like Netflix’s “Beef” and HBO’s “The White Lotus.”
Erskine has hinted at the excitement of where the show will lead but refrained from giving away any details. With the departure of Glover and Erskine, fans eagerly anticipate what new direction the series will take and who will step into the iconic roles. The second season promises to deliver more unforgettable journeys and adventures, building upon the foundation laid by its predecessor while charting its own unique path.
